Did you know that there is a term for labeling generations based on their birth year? There is a generation of baby boomers, generation X, generation Y, generation Z, and the last one is the alpha generation. Each of these generations has different characteristics that are influenced by conditions when they were born and grew up.

Generation Y, or as known as the millennial generation, are those born around 1980-1995 and are often referred to as the lazy generation because they are used to living with technology and cannot be separated from their cellphones in their daily lives. Even though they have high curiosity and confidence, and are the generation that has read the most books, it might surprise you to know that millennials are very susceptible to depression and anxiety disorders.

Why are millennials so susceptible to experiencing anxiety in their lives? Social media is said to be one of the triggers for this generation's vulnerability. Too much exposure to social media has links to developing anxiety. One of the main causes is pressure and lifestyle demands that are often displayed on social media which have a negative impact on the mental health of the millennial generation leading to feelings of not being good enough.

A person who has a generalized anxiety disorder has some of the following signs:

  • Excessive anxiety and worry that lasts all the time for at least 6 months
  • Anxiety that is difficult to control
  • Causes interference with activities
  • There is no specific disease or health condition that is the cause

Anxiety can also cause physical symptoms, such as always feeling tired, having trouble sleeping, headaches, shaking, excessive sweating, nausea, stomach pain, and recurrent diarrhea.

In fact, anxiety is a natural thing to happen to humans. However, if it is excessive and continues to be allowed, this will become a worrying situation and must be addressed immediately. To get rid of anxiety, let's try the following tips:

1. Reduce staying up late

Lack of sleep due to studying, working or hanging out until late at night results in lack of sleep. Not having enough sleep negatively affects the areas of the brain and is associated with developing anxiety.

2. Yoga

You can prove your mental health by practicing yoga regularly. Yoga is believed to provide positive energy throughout the day.

3. Limiting social media interactions

If reading and interacting with social media makes you uncomfortable, you should limit yourself so that you only use social media for important things.

The cause of the millennial generation easily experiencing anxiety can indeed be from many factors and is not the same for each individual. However, whatever the cause, you must immediately address it before it can interfere with your activities.
