PARENTING TIPS IF DAD WORKS OUTSIDE THE CITY

It is not only the mother who plays a role in the growth and development of a child. Fathers also have an equally important role. The role and presence of the father in the family help strengthen and build a sense of security in the child's life. A father gives a child a role model to follow, the function of the father in the family is very important and cannot be replaced by anyone.

Research shows that children who are close to their father will have optimal development in terms of:

• Better language skills
• Lower behavior issues
• Better academic performance

However, not all families are in ideal conditions, where the father and mother are living under one roof. In order to meet the economic needs of the family, a father or husband may be forced to be far away from his wife and children. It might not be a problem if it's only a few weeks. But sometimes, this can go on for long periods of time. Such conditions make mothers have to take on the important role of fathers to assist children's growth and development.

What should moms do if dad works out of town for a long time? 

• Mothers should take the time to listen to stories that their children experience on a daily basis both at home and at school.
• Mothers are more sensitive when they see their child is sad, not happy, or moody and need to take the initiative to find the cause, whether their child is sick or there is some other reason.
• Make sure to make time for walks or other relaxing activities together even without a dad. Invite your children to have fun. There is no need to go far or too expensive places because what they need more is family time and a sense of togetherness.

As for fathers who are out of town, even though they are far away, this does not need to be a barrier; fathers can still stay close to their children. By keeping communication and a sense of closeness.

• Greet children regularly in the morning and evening after they have finished activities. And ask what activities they have planned for or done today.
• Communicating via video calls, especially if your child is still a toddler. This is important so that your little one stays familiar with their father's face.
• Set a date for when you can visit/return to your family. No matter how busy dad is at work, he should give his family a schedule for when he can come home. These days will be what the whole family has been waiting for.
• Prepare a surprise when you get home, bring food or items that your little one loves. This will make them feel loved and cared for.
• Family time should be free from work and other matters. Make the time you go home special by only focusing on your family.



For fathers, even though they are far apart from their families, it does not mean that they do not have a role in the growth and development of their children. Creating good communication between a father, mother and their children is one of the keys to being a long-distance dad.
