The Myths of Diabetes

There are currently around eight million Indonesian people who are suffering from diabetes. Many people with diabetes do not even realized they have it. To make things worse, there are many misleading myths surrounding this illness. In this article, we want to share some of the common thoughts surrounding diabetes.

1. Diabetes is only suffered by the elderly

This is a myth. Even young people can develop diabetes. Bad, fast-paced lifestyles and unhealthy food intake have been blamed for causing diabetes among the young.

2. The children of diabetic parent(s) must have diabetes

This is not necessarily true. Although some types of diabetes are genetic, if you maintain a healthy lifestyle, you may not develop diabetes even if your parents are diabetic.

3. Diabetes is not preventable

This is a myth. Diabetes can be prevented by eating healthy and maintaining healthy lifestyle.

4. Diabetic people must not consume any carbohydrate

This is not necessarily true. Diabetics may consume carbohydrate, but it is the high calorific content that must be avoided. Carbohydrate with low glycemic index and wheat (for its high content of fiber) are good for people with diabetes.

5. Diabetic people must be treated with insulin

This is a myth. Not all types of diabetes must be treated with insulin. The keys to the successful treatment for diabetes are the combination of regular physical activities and healthy eating and the compliance to the medical treatment prescribed by the doctor.
