Five Foods to Combat Hepatitis C Virus

Liver is an important organ that functions to discharge the toxins from the body. However, hepatitis infection can disturb this function and prevent the organ from performing properly. As a result, the body is weak and prone to infections.

While hepatitis can be caused by a number of factors including bacterial infection, liver injury because of toxins, or autoimmune disease, these five healthy foods have been recommended for combating hepatitis C.

1. Fish

Many kinds of fish, like salmon, mackerel, tuna and sardine, are rich in omega-3 fatty acid. Fish fat is a very good source of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). According to Nicole Cutler L. Ac, a licensed acupuncturist and Chinese traditional medicine expert in California, these two fatty acids can reduce liver inflammation. If you don’t like fish, you can take fish oil supplement as the alternative.

2. Turmeric

Turmeric is a spice used for making curry-based dishes. This yellow spice contains a compound called curcumin. Researchers have also found that the anti-inflammation effect of turmeric is like the effect of some medicines like hydrocortisone and Motrin®, but without the side effect. As explained by Steven D. Ehrlich, NMD, an expert of complementary and alternative medicines in Phoenix, AZ, turmeric also has the ability to kill bacteria and cancer cells.

3. Berries

All berries, like blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, and cranberry, are rich in antioxidants. They all have high content of anthocyanin, an antioxidant element that has anti-inflammation characteristics. Berries should be consumed regularly to reduce or prevent liver inflammation.

4. Green tea

The flavonoid found in green tea serves as the natural anti-inflammation element that helps to combat the inflammation in the body. The research team of Laura W. Bush Institute has also proven that regular consumption of green tea can improve the bone health and reduce the inflammation suffered by women who have reached the menopause.

5. Sweet Potato

Sweet potato is good for reducing inflammation. This is because sweet potato contains anthocyanin and the orange pigment found in sweet potato also indicates that it contains carotenoid, an anti-oxidant element that can improve the body’s immunity and prevent cancer.

Because these five foods are natural products, we don’t have to worry about the side effects. But if you have hepatitis, you still need to consult with the doctor for more effective treatment of the disease.
